Newton Abbot 'Virtual' Library

15th April 2020
Information from Newton Abbot Libray:

I am writing to let you know how the library service is able to support children's reading, particularly at this time when children are unable to get books from school.

1) Accessing digital resources from our ebook service:

Download Libby from the Apple store or Google Play or Microsoft.

Login using a Devon library card and PIN - library cards for other members of the family can be added . PINs can be obtained by e-mailing your local library e.g. newtonabbot.library@librariesunlimited.org.uk

To find children's books in the online library
- filter using 'juvenile' or
- click explore, then Guide: Kids

Some titles are 'always available', others may require a short wait - if this is the case, borrowers can place a 'hold' on the item they want.

eBooks and eAudiobooks are available

New titles  are added weekly.  Extra copies of the most popular titles are ordered to keep waiting times short.

2) Booktrack

How many books can you read before you go back to school?! Can you get all the way to 100?!

Booktrack is Devon Libraries' fun 100 book reading challenge - children usually visit the library to talk about the books they have been reading, being given badges when key milestones are reached.

Booktrack has been adapted to work virtually. Children are encouraged to read books - physical or digital - at home. A member of library staff will read and respond to any email sent by parents on behalf of the children. We would love to see some pictures as well as reading the children's thoughts about the books they have read. If parents are happy, then we will share these on our social media channels.

Staff will keep a record of the books that each child has read, sending send digital celebrations when they reach the milestones!

I am sure lots of parents and families will be looking for ways to keep children reading and this will hopefully help. I would be very grateful if you could share this information with them please.

Many thanks and stay safe and well,
